| Preparation: Excavate the proposed area by removing the soil to accommodate a minimum 2" sand base, machine compact to min 95% of uniform density and thickness. Remove all deleterious material. Forming: Install your form boards using a wooden 1x4 or 2x4 for straight edges or 1/4" bender board for a curvy patio or "free form" patio. Use 1x2 wood stakes approximately every 16" o.c but take care as to not drive the nails all the way through the forms, screws are preferred. Your concrete thickness needs to be a minimum 5" to 6" thick so set your forms accordingly, make sure your patio has an 1/8" per ft slope for drainage. Steel Reinforcement: Install at least #3 reinforcement bar (3/8" rebar) every 15" on center each way and sit them on 3" chairs that are placed over your compacted sand base, Cut #4 rebars (1/2" steel reinforcement bar) 18" long. drill holes into your existing foundation where the patio ties into the house every 15" on center aligning with the steel reinforcement grid you are going to install. Once you have drilled all your holes inject epoxy into the holes then insert your 18" #4 dowels into the pre drilled holes and tie them to your reinforcement grid. All rebar laps must be a minimum 18" and tied securely with tie-wire. Concrete Placement: Measure your patio and calculate the square footage by measuring length times width. Take the total square footage and divide that number into 60 (concrete coverage at 6" thick will give you 60 sq ft per cubic yard of concrete). This formula will determine how many cubic yards of concrete you will need to order. For a stamped concrete patio you will need to order a six sack mix with a 4" slump mixed with a fiber mesh reinforcement to alleviate premature surface cracking. Once your concrete arrives on site for your new stamped concrete patio you will need to optimize your concrete mix to achieve a slate, cobble, brick, field stone or flagstone texture depending on your concrete mold stamps that your experienced decorative concrete finisher will be using, stamping concrete is not a do it yourself project, stamped concrete requires special training and certifications. Your concrete mix optimization packs can be ordered by filling out this form. Start pouring your concrete at one end and work your way to the other side, screeding the concrete as you go with a magnesium screed and aggregate seeder. Use an electrical concrete vibrator to fill all voids and to conform to your form configuration. Do not spray water on to the hydrating concrete surface as this cools the concrete to quickly and will result in surface cracks or "spidering". Install expansion joints approximately in sections no larger than 181 sq ft. Poly joints are preferred over a wooden joint. Removal of forms: Once the concrete has set for about 3 hours then carefully remove the forms then color and texture the edges. Concrete sealing: You will need to cure seal your slab within 24 hours of your concrete placement by spraying the surface with sealer. |
